OVERVIEW
While wild waterfowl are the natural reservoirs of low pathogenic avian influenza, the incursion of highly pathogenic H5 into North America in the winter of 2021/2022 marked a dramatic shift in avian influenza ecology across the continent. In the years since, we have seen large-scale mortalities in species such as geese and sea ducks, with relatively limited impacts on dabbling ducks. Meanwhile, we have observed unprecedented disease impacts on non-traditional species such as raptors and waterbirds as well as on domestic poultry and cattle. This presentation will outline the progression of research aimed at understanding all aspects of avian influenza and wild waterfowl, ranging from estimating species-specific prevalence rates to understanding the impacts of infection on local and migratory movements. We will then demonstrate how these studies are used collectively to inform the spatial and temporal risk of HPAI transmission from wild waterfowl to domestic poultry.
